Hi,

I have a 84 W x 58 H x 44 D cm 165 Litre AquaStyle tank, at the moment it is being used as a community tank with 4 (2 inch) Clown Loaches, 1 (5 inch) Clown Loach, a Bull Dog Pleco, mixed Tetras, 2 Key holes and 2 Kribensis.

I would like to start keeping Chiclids but have no idea where to start and what I would need to remove from the tank, I have a friend who would like to take my Tetras as I guess they will have to go, but I would like to keep the Clowns and the Plec if possible. What if any Chiclids can I keep in this tank?

If I have to I am willing to give up all the current fish as long as I can find suitable homes for them. It has also crossed my mind to buy another tank but the missus is not to keen on that!

Any idea what species of ciclids you'd like to have?

Well the only one I have decided on that I would really like so far is the Electric Yellow Labido.

That's an African Ciclid. Which means you'll have to t rid of EVERYTHING presently in the tank. The yellow lab is one of the nicest of African Cichlids. On the shy side. It's best to set up the tank then JUST for African Cichlids because they have different needs and requirements and habitat then south american cichlids or what you have now. They need lots of caves, rocks, and different salt (not aquarium salt), and as mentioned, the ph requirement is different.
The salt used for them would kill the other fish.

Right, I have just had a good look into what I want and I would like to stock Malawi Chiclids.

I will be getting a second tank for the fish that I have already as I do not want to lose my Plec or Loaches. So that will leave me a 165 litre tank to stock with Malawi Chiclids, now I just need to know how to go about setting it up ready for them and then what species and numbers I can keep?

I know I am asking alot but I really would prefer to get things right.

That's what the forums for! Asking questions. :)

With African Cichlids, THE MORE THE MERRIER.
I had about 100 of them in a 75 gallon tank.
They kept spawning and spawning. You should build caves all along the back wall of the tank. All different size caves to accomodate all sizes. They'll GROW and the babies born will be teeny and need very small places to hide or they'll get eaten. You can use rose slate, regular slate, and rocks.

84x58x44cm = 217 Litres. = 56.6G's.

You could do a Jack Dempsey, Convict, Green Terror. and MAYBE another Mid-sized cichlid, perhaps a Gold Severum? But you could keep the pleco in there.
