I will try to be as short as possible. I have had a 30 gal standard tank for about 4 years. No problems with any fish I had. Tetras, livebearers, etc...easy fish. Well for my birthday, my husband bought me a 65 gal hexagon tank....so I thought Cichlids. Being the overzealous person I am, I jumped right in and bought fish that I thought were pretty colors. I asked the people I bought them from the normal questions, are they compatible, aggressive, etc.... to make a long story short, I have: 3 - kenyi, 2 - red zebra, 3 socolofi (1 is albino), 1 - chessboard krib, 1 - msobo, & 1 -blue zebra that I am now trying to get rid of.

So now the questions: lol first does anybody want these fish - cheap.

Seriously.

I asked this question in another forum and was just told how stupid I was to start with the cichlid I did. Please someone help me. What can I safely house in this tank that is within the cichlid family? I thought maybe angelfish and maybe dwarves of some sort in the bottom? I am not making the same mistake twice! All advice will be greatly appreciated.

i wouldn't keep anything with angels, they're not too nice.

[haha yeah i got a kenyi not thinking, shipped her out after a few weeks]

the red and blue zebras are actually really easy to keep.

kribs, if you wonna get real simple, and rams

You should be able to take ALL of the fish back to your local fish shop (LFS) and trade them in for something a little more suitable.

Hex tanks are never ideal for cichlids (they really like their floor space) but you could get away with rams (nice and colourful) kribs (same again) or some of the dwarf cichlids from south america.

I'm afraid i doubt anyone will want to pay for the fish, their nothing particularly rare, and pretty readily available.

Best of luck

I called the fish store and was told..."Yeah, I will take them, but will give you nothing for them" No trade either. So I guess I will end up giving them to someone, or something. As for the hex, it is 26" accross and each pane is 14" and 29" high, I like the Bolivian Rams but am not sure how many to get or how many to end up with and thought maybe an angel or two and maybe some tetras of some sort so the top half wouldn't be bare, but Bethany says nothing with angels. So I am not sure what to do.

I don't see why a couple of angels wouldn't work. most other cichlids might be too aggressive, but rams might work with them.

Unlucky about the LFS. They can be a real pain sometimes (but atleast its an avenue to get rid of unsuitable fish in a tight pinch)

Angels can work in your tank, nice size, tall etc.

Rams, could get away with a pair, and they'd get along better with some cats, tetras etc.

Could go all out and have a full biotope tank. Could of rams, some corys, a huge shoal of tetras, and a shoal of hatchet fish for the top 1/4 of the water.

Best of luck with it. Hope you find a good home for the fish.

Those are beautiful rams Frostyone!

The thought of a biotope never crossed my mind. That sounds like a good idea too!

What do you all think?

2 - Rams
4 -5 cory
15 - 20 Tetra (maybe rummynose or head and tail light)
1 - Angel

Hatchets? Would the zebra danio work? I have 10 in my 30 gal tank.
