Hi.
I hope that someone can help me with advice regarding fish tank odor.I have 100 gallon tank which became source of unpleasant smell.I bought the tank 4 months ago, regular maintenance and WC,every 3-4 days I vaccum the poop, never overfeed,I have only pair of motas in it.Minimum decorations - 2 pots and a mangrove root, last week I removed the root ,cuz I thought that it might be rotting and thats the source of smell.Last week I wiped the glass, very carefully syphoned the sand, brushed the pots, cleaned the filter. The smell is still there and it drives me crazy.I had 75 gal Oscar tank and 55 gal geos tank before, never had this kind of issue. What can be the reason?Do I miss something?I am really desperated.

Check under the rim of the tank if it has one as sometimes food and gunk gets trapped underneath it.

Can you describe the smell? Is it rotting food, earthy like soil or a sulphur smell if using Prime water conditioner?

I would put some water in a cup and go to another room with it and check if it smells. If it smells do what Rocksor said. You might have a problem with the tanks cycle.
If the water does not smell I would check the cover. I once found some carnivor pellets stuck under the lid. It smelled quite bad.

I use prime since I started the hobby, but the prime smell lasts like 20 mins after the WC and than it is gone.I can describe the smell like food smell slightly resembling rotting wood.I know that this sound strange ,but this is how I feel it.

Did you vacuum all the way to the tank bottom where the wood was and the surrounding area? If so then get purigen or carbon like chemipure and put it into your filter for 2-3 weeks. See if that helps

Thanks! Which brand/flavor pellet food are you feeding?

I saw in your other topic that you were on vacation for a month and planned on using an automatic feeder. Any chance there is some damp food left in the auto feeder or that it needs to be thoroughly cleaned out?

Yes check all areas for caught pellet foods!!!

I was feeding my plecos and dropping the pellets by my heater and some pellets were getting caught on top of the hearted they were getting wet and started rotting….when I cleaned it the smell was putrid!!
