Well, I am a freshwater guy as of now..But I want to try out saltwater. I was thinking of starting with a 2.5gallon aquarium with live sand, softies and maybe a fish if there are any that can be in a 2.5g. What are the best hoods/lights, filters, heaters for a 2.5 gallon? And also how do you cycle a 2.5gallon aquarium? Any help would be appreciated!

research, research, research.... There is tons of information on here regarding this same topic.

Go bigger if you can.... you probably can get away with maybe 2 fish in that tank. And these are going to be under 3 inches.

I would not start anything smaller then at least a 20+ tank...IMO

Now where talking lol,

I'm not good with corals...someone will chime in soon. For 10 gallon you can probably get away with a clown goby..any small gobies that are under I'd say 3-4 inch. Fish you can probably get away with a trio of fire fish (Maybe because I'm judging mine which they seem not to be very active). Also you can do what some nano tank keepers do, is have a nice coral tank, with an anemone and a clown. Seems very boring, but the corals make it exciting to look at.

Hope this helped a little bit.

I would go with clown but that is what EVERYONE has.... But ya, after I get this shell-dweller tank done, that is my next project. So I might be asking more detailed questions pretty soon.

Corals in a 10 gallon will work fine...just make sure you can keep up on water changes. A ten gallon tank will evaporate a lot of water in a short amount of time. Or relative to the rest of the tank at least.
A clown may get a bit too big for a ten gallon...maybe have a small goby, a shrimp and a chromis maybe?
I'm just preparing to start my 36g reef. So I don't know all the ways of the trade so to speak. :D
Wait for a more experienced person to chime in, like Fleshy or nonstophoops :P

You are very limited with a 2.5 gallon tank, but it can be done. Other than some inverts, I don't know of any salt water fish that can be homed long term in a tnak that small. There are a few corals, like star polyps, that you could put in there.

I would strongly suggest making that a FW betta tank, and get a larger tank for a first SW tank.

Just my $0.02 :)

id start bigger than 2.5g, you could jus do the corals in that, no fish, but i think itd be hard to find a neccessary light for something that small, tho im not sure on dimensions. ive got a small clown in my 10g, and it doesnt evap as much as youd think, i top off maybe 1/4 gal every other day.
