yeah we do, what i hope to build up to is a redfin perch, but the size of the tank, and my inexperience with keeping fish is why i'm not looking at grabbing one of them right away.
(i know the redfin aren't technically native and are an introduced species, but i figure if i actually have to catch it in the wild, its native enough)

European perch are like my dream fish to own... impossible for me to find here in the US so don't worry too much on those cichlids!

Yeah mate, i can kinda relate, Considered a pest here and illegal to transport, BUT heres the thing, if you have them, you are allowed to keep them in personal waterways that are not connected to any others (such as a dam on a farm) or in a tank.
So basically, yes you can keep them, but they cannot be sold alive, and cannot be moved alive.
Gotta go fishing and dodge the rangers to obtain one :(
BUT i do love fishing :P

I would say a 30gal with exodons (bucked tooth tetra) they are predators at a guppies size! Like mini piranha

G day,

I'm aussie too! You should be able to get a huge selection of cichlids. At least we can in the eastern states! I haven't ever really gotten into them, but my LFS sells heaps of south american and african guys.

Good luck with it!

Welcome. And remember, starting in the 55 gallon range is better. Larger tanks are easier to take care of. Anyways, you could start with Rainbow fish- they're native to your area, are easy to take care of, and have striking coloration. If you wanted to go different, I'd say an African cichlid tank.

White Moth, Great to see another aussie :)
if the cichlids are in pet stores over east, probably will be in a few down here in the west to, i might not have to resort to the specialty fish store after all, since there prices are insane, definetly going for a look around the stores, leaving in about an hour to be honest :)

and big blue, the only issue is at the moment my parents are saying start with a smaller tank, and if i don't have many issues with that, then they have absolutely no problems letting me move onto bigger tanks.
Fair enough to me, better to start small :)

Fishy12, the buck toothed tetra, sound quite interesting actually definetly going to go for a look to see if theres any of those about, bit of research on them first i thinks, haven't really heard or seen much about them in my limited experience.
