Help pick a fish.

That would be a better plan than just introducing one female, as established males and new world cichlid males in general are notorious for killing females (it isn’t uncommon for females to kill males as well) . Whichever species you pick I’d get some females that are quite a bit smaller than the male so they won’t try and challenge him for dominance and you can create hiding places the females can get into and the male cannot. This will help if you ever decide to use the hole in the divider method for spawning them

Thank you. This was very helpful!

Will a 125g be enough?

A 125G should work for the species you have listed. I would however urge you to keep a divider on hand as cichlid pairs can be very unpredicted and one can choose to kill the other in a matter of minutes or hours.

I have the tank now and have decided to go with Honduran Jags from cota. I could use more help in picking another fish though.

Im in the process of rehoming fish that I do not want and will have a spot opening in my 300 community. The stock in the tank now is.

1- amphilophus sagittae
1-parachromis friedrichsthalii
1-herichthys carpintis
1-vieja argentea
2-vieja maculicauda

I will be removing one of the vieja maculicauda and would like to get a replacement fish in with the jag order from cota. Im looking at either Amphilophus Istlanus or Petenia Splendida but am open to go with something else on his list. I would want to grow this fish out with the Jags who are 2" with the goal of one pair of Jags and a male fish for the 300. Any info or help with this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Seems this forum is dead. Nobody has any opinions on the 2 fish?

Ive been keeping fish for over 20 years now and not once have I allowed one of my fish to kill its tank mate. I guess thats the kind of fish keeper I need to be on here to get any attention on my post?? Maybe I could even be a moderator and get tagged in all the post to give others advice?

This forum is not dead. Your post has probably been seen by many but's it hard to make the recommendations you'd want to here when most all would not recommend a community like this with cichlids that really shouldn't be together. And nobody cares if you've been keeping fish for 20 years or 1 year. The amount of time you claim to have been keeping fish generally doesn't always correlate to a certain experience level from what I've seen.

Yes I definitely dont have enough experience with allowing my fish to murder each other. Seems that is what it takes here.

Well no what's recommended here is that you don't put fish together that could murder each whenever that switch is flipped in one of them. You may have gotten lucky so far but are you awake 24/7? Are you at home all day, everyday to intervene if needed? Probably not. It's best to not have that great risk there at all.

Fair enough. I will say though that each individual fish has its own personality.

I decided to go with the Istlanum. Even though my cichlids in the 300 dont lip lock I read that the Splendida has a weak mouth structure.

If he doesnt work out I will remove what ever fish thats necessary. I will not let them murder each other. Fish will be removed like I did with my salvini, ebjd, severum, p. multifasciatus and lyonsi.
