Ok I have a 16" male umbee that has stopped eating. I haven't seen stringy poo coming from him but I've seen it floating in the tank. What is the best thing to begin treating this big guy with? Metro? Epsom? I have tried soaking his food but he still declines the meal. Should I pull him and give him either the Epsom or the metro through a syringe? I am really worried about this guy I will feel gutted if he keeps losing weight. His personality hasn't changed he is just snubbing all of his heavy hitting food selections.

Thoughts? Solutions?

Thanks in advance.

Parasite guard CURED my fish stomach problems. I think it can cure your fish too. Maybe half more extra dose because your fish is big . GL

To prevent him from getting parasites again, you should feed food that have garlic as an ingredient in them. I heard garlic kills their internal parasites. Im not sure though but it worked great for me because it cured my FHs Hex(if they eat, otherwise I soak med)

Parasite Guard is a great medicine as mentioned, as it contains both prazi and metro in a dissolving tablet to kill whatever type of parasite or worm he may have. (Works better than Prazi Pro or Seachem's Metro IMO as I have treated many sick fish)

The best way to start would be to Quarantine him, as that would require less medication to add to the tank and also prevent your other fish from getting sick as well; I would do a full water change.

What saved my old Rio Mag whom had some form of hex around 8" (which I did not expect in a hardy fish) was shooting diluted epsom salt down his throat via a pipette w/ a little bit of metro mixed in as well. A pipette is safe as long as you don't go to far down his throat to damage the esophagus.

I would try the natural route of espom first, then add either metro to the solution or add Parasite Guard to the Quarantine tank as it is only around $5 at petsmart and it works.

Since I started adding liquid probiotics to my tanks I have yet to have a sick fish, I recommend it.

How long has he been not eating?

Is the poo thread like? Cause I know bloat poo doesn't float.
Pm Aquanero or RD as they helped save my Umbee

Explain how you know "bloat poo doesn't float", as that has no relevance to the fish being sick with bloat (hex/sbd,etc) or not.

Lol i have had lots of fish with bloat and it is thread like and falls to the bottom and kills fast!
IMO its always best to try to narrow down what illness the fish has before going nuts with the meds and pulling out fish to squirt Epsom salt down its throat!! . Op never stated how long it has not eaten for. Yes that parasite guard is great stuff!

have you tried a healthy goldfish. some people feed live every so often to keep their system moving.
imho umbees are very hardy

Good idea. Process garlic with beefheart etc? How did you do with your FH.
