WHAT new world cichlids?

Personally: Texas, JD's, FM's, GT's, I prefer centrals.

Many friends have kept Severums, Angelfish and even Rams successfully in pH around 8 (mine is up around 8.2, however many friends of mine have pH's of around 7.8). The only thing we have not tried have been eartheaters.

Most of them lived past the decade mark and looked very good. The only disclaimer I would include is that all of us are either breeding the fish in this water already, OR they are coming from the LFS which uses the same water as we do anyway. None of us have tried Wild Caught or fish coming from a tank that is substantially lower than our pH.

I think he is hiding due to the stress of the move and nothing to do with PH.

Keep it simple (KISS) let him get used to it....if you start messing with the ph then it can throw out other parameters and if you are reliant on buying RO water all the time you are less likely to keep up the water changes; therefore I would prefer high PH and low Nitrates (and higher toxic factors) than poor quality low PH water.

For all we know the fish could have been captive bread in high PH water.

Get a more accurate PH test as many are way out. My tablet test reads over 8.2 but the water is nearer 7.8

Thanks for all the great responses. The tap wAter is over 8 here. And I did do loadsa research. It just so happens that the rotkiel, green and golden were in a harder water system in the lfs but this beauty was in with discus. Hence the low PH.

They are defo not not wild caughtand and it is a juvenial so I assume my efforts for a slow acclimitisation were the correct thing to do. I have left him for several hours now and he is charging around and harrasin a synodontis three times his size.

To the person suggesting I keep Africans............ Uhave and frankly with the water being so perfect it doesn't make for much of a hobby as they breed like mad and prettymuch thrive.

If I see that heis doing anything but be as healthy as possible I shall make efforts to lower the PH.

I think I may have unneccessarily panicked over this but better to ask than kill a poor fish :)
