ok

so to answer questions:
1. ammonia came up at 0 ppm
2. beeline, i use prime conditioner
3. after the change everyone seemed normal

big could u explain gas embolism please, is that like added the water to water because i position the hose to act like a waterfall.

Cold water can hold more dissolved gases, such as chlorine, oxygen and nitrogen. By cold I mean in the winter the tap water is cold, in the summer even the cold is comparatively warm. You have to be careful in the winter. Make sure you mix the water and prime in a bucket stir it a bit and then add it to the tank. A Ph swing would NOT have killed so many in such a short time. Gas embolism however can kill all in that amount of time...good luck.

PS this should not be in the lounge. Info to be had here :)

A jump from 7.0 to 7.8 is not a "slight bit".Its logarithmic,7.1 is a point higher,but 7.2 is one hundred points higher.So imagine 7.8!!!!

i beleive you have it wrong and that accually a jump from 6-7 or 7-8 would be one hundred points higher than the previous. not from 7.1-
7.2. For example, pH 10 is ten times more alkaline than pH 9 and 100 times (10 times 10) more alkaline than pH 8

all i could think of would be mabey your water had alot of chrorine or another hard metal or a large sway in temp difference during the water change. though your conditioner would pick those metals up. so what percente of water did you change? and do you know what temp the water you put in the tank was at approx?
