i bought an oscar yesterday, he is about 2.5" i have him in a 30g grow out which he will later go into a 75gal. since i bought him he has hid under the filter and i dropped some NLS sinking small cichlid pellets right in front of him and he wont eat.

can you help me get him to eat and stop hiding??

give him time. he is just sulking. almost all oscars sulk, even when big. I can guarantee that is the case with yours. welcome to MFK!

I agree. Not only are Oscars sulkers, but every new fish needs time to acclimate himself to your tank. Typically, I won't even bother to try to feed any new fish for at least the first day or so, as their digestive system may not be up to par due to the stress. Give him a few days, and he'll be fine!

Fish can really go for up to a week without being fed, and still be alright. Unless he's really sick or something, he'll start eating well before he starves. Put some food in, and back away from the tank so he doesn't feel threatened. Keep an eye on him for about 10 minutes, and take out anything he hasn't eaten by then so it doesn't rot in the tank. If he doesn't eat anything, try the next day. He'll be eatin like a pig in no time

if i put food in and then remove after wont he just get more stressed by me removing the food?

ok i gotta clean the tank tommoro so he wont be to happy after that either.

He'll be alright. Just give him time to get used to his tank. It would have been a good idea to clean the tank right before you put him in. If you have to, then do it, but if you can wait, I would. Leave the tank lights off for the first few days as well.

i added 2 oscars at the same time. both were 1.5 inches and they just stuck together the whole time exploring. next day they got used to everything. they still stick together now at like 5 inches.
