thanks going to buy some vinegar when the wife gets here.

what do you think about maken your own saltwater? or should I say the hell with it and buy ocean water from my LFS at .75 c a gallon?

If you can get pre-made salt water at 75c a gallon then do that. Will save you a lot of hassle. It will cost more but you will avoid RO/DI systems, mixing tanks, salinity meters, and mess. The places around me want a few bucks per gallon. Just get some 5 gallon containers.

Placing live rock in your sump is fine, many have done it before though it's not all that more effective than just placing it in the tank.

Yes, but that's when you don't already have bio balls. Telling him to get rid of them and replace with live rock sounds like a sales pitch to me and is not necessary. I've had many saltwater tanks and have had live rock in the sump before as well, so that's not what I was getting at.
