Last week I was cleaning a 10 gallon it slipped and hit my coffee cup well the whole bottom cracked. I dont want to thow it out as you never know when you might need a piece of tempered glass. whats the best way I could take it apart is there some thing that would soften the silicon . Thanks.:)

Pure ammonia is "supposed" to dissolve silicone.

I just did a significant job that required removing silicone and used a LOT of it. I think my razor blade was the only thing that "softened" the silicone. Wet silicone is most defiantly dissolved by ammonia, but I have my doubts about cured silicone.

Before you start this task, ask your self..... are you sure you will ever use this glass or are you stashing things away because you can? Ever needed a piece of glass before? Its probably not tempered either, and you can buy that glass at Home Depot/Ace/True Value for a few $$ if you ever did need it. I really doubt its worth the work unless you have a specific project in mind. And even then, I would consider buying before I took that apart.

If it just cracked, you can probably silicone another piece of glass on top of the crack and be good to go. If its shattered or spider-webbed, then you're probably best off just tossing the tank. A piece of glass like what you would get from a 10g tank is around $2.50 at lowes. You'd just about use $2 worth of razor blades...

10g aren't tempered. Spend the $10 and buy a new one.

Tempered glass will shatter into a million little pieces, not crack.
