Sometimes it takes patience to get replies in this section, since its not as straight forward with planted tanks...

I cant remember the exact cause of this type of algae, but more info helps...

I.e. type of lights used, tank size, lighting periods etc... The more info the better...

There are some critters and fish that munch on black hair algae. For example rosy barbs i believe, flagfish, and true siamese algae eaters. If you can add any of these and they are compatible with your fish it might work.

Most likely there as excessive nutrients (uneaten food) in the water that spiked the nitrates. Black algae is very opportunistic under these conditions.
Try a 2-3 days blackout - total blackout, meaning no lights, tank totally covered and no food - and daily 20% water changes for the following week.
