hope things work out well good luck =]

basically, this is what i've learned from having ich, and talking with dmed.

the heat does not necessarily kill the ich. hwat it does is simply speed up its lifespan. the ich, initially will get worse after increasting the temperature (becuase it speeds the process). This causes the ich to go to the floor of the tank, where it will multiply like mad. it is in this short window of time that the salt kicks in to kill the ich.

the fish are however susceptible to other diseases afterwards, so you should watch carefully afterwards. do water changes regularly, also, replace any water with new salt. after this is done, stop with the salt. lower the temp a couple of degrees each day back to the status quo, and boom bam. there you go.

You do need to do waterchanges though. Its very important. The ich can only be killed and removed when it is in its free swimming stages, when its not in the cyst, the white spots on the fish. When you fish seem to clear up, you need to do A LOT of water changes over a period of a few days. Continue to use the salt, even if it doesn't seem to be any ich in the tank any more.

Keep your tank temp in the upper 70's, low 80's. Having such lower temps that you already had is inviting ich to come in. Higher temps make fish more resiliant to ich, plus keeps them more active/healthier.

As a side note. There ARE some meds you can use. Aquari-Sol is a great brand of ich medicine. Very mild, won't dye your water, and shouldn't harm your sensative fish. I had an ich outbreak in my tank, so I raised the temp, salted, and started treating with this Aquari-Sol. I also did daily 30% water changes to remove any free swimming parasites. Within five days my tanks were clear and looking MUCH better. I think I should point out that I have some fairly sensative cichlids, not to mention my black ghost knifes, which are notorious for being sensative to meds. The plecos did fine as well. :) The meds aren't a neccessity, but they shore do help. With ich, the quicker you treat it the better. ;)

Peanut most likely knows what he is talking about. In first dealing with ich, I read that it is not necessary to do water changes because you will just be removing the salt that you put in, and you'll just have to keep adding more salt. I have successfully treated ich several times without doing a water change until 3 days after all signs of ich are gone. I am not saying I have done it the best way, but I have been very successful at riding ich with no fatalities this way.

well, the ich is almost gone off of my loaches, i have not done any water changes, i should do 50% water changes after 3 days of no ich look? how many?
