aw man that sucks!

Looks like food or maybe one of those pieces of gravel stuck in it's throat, I would definitely advise trying to pull it out with tweezers.

Net it out and keep it in the net and let it struggle for a while to get it tired.

Once it's not as active, grab it with a wet towel and be careful not to squeeze too much.

Then use finesse to try and pull the obstruction out.

I think you might have to take it out with tweezers; in that case, firmly grasp it and just carefull take out the piece.

it was really deep, couldn't see past the gills. doesn't feel like something's lodged inside, feels like most of the lump is from swelling, rather than protrusion. he's been eating small fish and swallowing so my guess is it's not stuck food but some kind of infection?

If bacterial infection is suspected, then it doesn't hurt to try meds like Mardel "Maracyn, and Maracyn 2' or tetracycline, etc....

Whenever swelling occurs, try the meds to see how it goes.
