5 miles from that one place
Ok I got this 130 gallon tank. It came with 2 aquaclear 500's. Junk I figure. Neways. I filled it up. Barebottom. Let it run with the old filters for about a week. Then I went to the river and caught about 25 or 30 minnows around 3 inches long and put them in there. All went well. I left them for about 2 weeks and put them in a buddies pond. Emptied the tank and it sit for a few weeks. Well me and my son went fishing and caught a couple small brighter colored blue gill and I set up a quick tank with a rubbermaid tote and one of the filters. No chemicals or nothing. Never tested the water I just figured if they make it then good deal. And they did fine for about 2 weeks so I bought 3 6 to 8 inch blue catfish to put with them and they did fine for about a week. So I went to wal mart and got some play sand and put it in the tank with some rocks and driftwood and filled it back up just like I did before the minnows. Let it settle for a couple hrs and put the fish n the tank and emptied the tote. About 2 hrs after that I go downstairs and the tank is leaking from somewhere. So I setup the tote again the same way I did for the bluegill the first time. Now everything is dead. I mean they died quick. I dunno if the sand poisoned them or what happened. I'm new to this hobby and that way just like wow. I'm glad it wasn't some expensive fish. Ne ideas on what might have happened? also is sand not suitable for fresh water setups. I've seen it before but I dunno why mine failed

I also found a fish store near by with 3 of the fish I wanted. Has a 7 inch or so tigershovel nose catfish. A bunch of baby red tail cats about 1.5 to 2 in. And some 6 in or so clown knife. I'm wanting to get the tigershovel nose atlast this weekend. So I'm setting up a roughtly 4.5 ft long by 18 in wide by 12 in tall clear rubbermaid tote for him. Its only till I figure out what went wrong with my tank. Why and where its leaking. Its acrylic and I dunno nothing about acrylic. I got a couple pcs of glass from a busted 55 gal I was going to build a 23 in tall by 4-5 ft long by 23 in wide plywood tank. I8 got enough wood and should be cutting it tomorrow. Now if I can figure out how to disassemble the 55 gal without busting the other glass

Don`t get pissed, but you need to read more and type less.
Get an understanding of the nitrogen cycle before you kill off more fish, especially if you are buying them.

rinsing the filter sponges kills off the bb that filters your water, make sure to clean the sponges in tank water, read about the nitrogen cycle

you'll find that you can't just use Kentucky windage to determine when a cycle is done.

Umm, what is Kentucky windage? Should I take offense to that? :D

I have read a few of those articles but there more for new tanks with new filtration. Mine is none of the neither. The filters supported those minnows fine till I took them out. I'm wondering if the sand killed the bluegill and catfish. I guess it could be a number of things but that's the first thingthat came to mind

lol . . . I first heard that term about 20 years ago

if you really don't know, it refers to a rifleman accounting for the wind when taking long aim . . . it typically means someone is making an estimate of outside factors . . . (sorry for the brief hijack)
