we just had a power surge and I think it killed my emp 500. The power was out for two seconds at the most. Now my filter won't well filter. I can still hear the motor going when I plug it in. How long will my tank be ok? Its just a 20gal with one con in it. I won't have a ride anywhere for about two and a half to three hours to be a new one. Will I be ok?

This is going to sound like a dumb question, but have you tried priming it?

Okay, just checking. You should probably pull the media out and put it in a shallow pan or a bucket of tank water to preserve the bacteria. Just leave it so that the water just covers the media. I think your fish will be fine for a couple of hours. Do you have an airstone or anything on the tank? It would help, for sure. I've moved large fish (a 20 inch Pacu) in a rubbermaid tub over a three hour drive, and he was fine. I just use an old bubble wall inside of the tub. This couldn't be any worse than that.

if you carnt get it going take the media out of it and put it in the tank, lights off and the bacteria will live longer there then in the stagnent filter till you get a new one.

any other filter or powerhead? in the tank.

If you hear the motor running then the filter is OK.

HOB filters are real simple animals. They contain a magnetic drive motor that has a impeller. And that is basically it.

The motor drive's the impeller and the tubing feeds the filter.

So if it is running you have 1 of 2 problems.

The first guess would be that the impeller and shaft are filthy and or contain some sand or possibly broken. And that is keeping it from spinning and or priming.

The other possibility is a that the feed tubbing is not set. If the center tube gets pulled up a little then the filter cannot create suction and there for will not prime.

Now would be a good time to get to know your filter inside and out. And pratice some problem solving skills.

i just did a tear down of it and cleaned it about a month ago. I'll try messing with the center tube see if thats the problem

I think my filter is shot...I got home form work tonight just as a storm is moving in with some incredible lightining. When I get home I noticed the clocks were reset due to power outage. Then I noticed my emperor 500 was not working. The lighting, heater and filter are all plugged into a surge protector and the other 2 are still working. The filter is not making any noise or anything. Is there anything I can do????
