I had this happen to one of my canister filters, power was out for a few hours and it came back on in the middle of the night, silly me didn't turn power off at switch and motor melted because it wasn't primes when it came back on. Took it back to where I bought it and unfortunately they couldn't get replacement parts, so new filter! They did tell me that they can be covered under your house insurance, or you can contact the electric company direct and they will sometimes pay to replace if the power out was there fault. I never bothered checking up on it, but now when the power goes out, I turn the tanks off so I can check them first. Very frustrating!
