HELP power surge just killed my filter!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had this happen to one of my canister filters, power was out for a few hours and it came back on in the middle of the night, silly me didn't turn power off at switch and motor melted because it wasn't primes when it came back on. Took it back to where I bought it and unfortunately they couldn't get replacement parts, so new filter! They did tell me that they can be covered under your house insurance, or you can contact the electric company direct and they will sometimes pay to replace if the power out was there fault. I never bothered checking up on it, but now when the power goes out, I turn the tanks off so I can check them first. Very frustrating!

That happened to me all the time with my Whispers, I just took a pencil and spun the impeller and that got it going everytime.

Is the motor at least warm? If the impeller is froze (or clogged/jammed), then all you need to do is dismantle the filter an clean the intake housing vigorously, remove the impeller and make sure it still spins freely. If the motor is not warm, or making the humming noise, then it is indeed possible it was fried out by the surge...

There is not any noisecoming from the motor but I took it off and it was warm. SO I pulled the filter apart cleaned it up and it works fine. Thanks to everybody who chimed in when I automatically assumed it was trash. Yall save me $80..
