Ouch! Only $20-$30 a pop out here. Didn't recognize that you were in aussie. Maybe some of the more experienced marine guys can suggest somthing else, assuming that is the problem. But if the polyps are opening up now it might have just been an issue of lighting, as was already stated. 
Always good to know what kind of hitch hikers you have crawling around at night, though. They can't see red light, so it's kind of surprising what you'll find if you get a flash light with a red lense or somthing of the sort
