Help! Red Tail Catfish with a bloated tummy.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi, If I were you I would not let his skin dry out on his head, just every once in a while pour some water over his head to keep moist. Giving him the laxative with a syringe idea sounds like a good choice. Maybe the bread you feed him created alot of gasses in his stomach, because he has a blockage ? best of luck and hope he gets better.

The metro is something I would recommend you keep on hand as it can be hard to find in some areas. I know none of our local stores carry it. I order it in quantities of 10 or 12 online at least once every year, mostly for the red tails cause they don't know when to stop eating... but we keep them with other fish so it's a little harder to control.

oh ok thanks for the helpful info. I think i failed to mention that both sides of its belly is bloated so it's quite proportional. Is it still the same symptoms as overeating?

With him being a red tail it is most likely over eating. If it were his swim bladder one side would sit much higher in the water than the other side, that doesn't seem to be the case. The darkening of his belly also points to over eating.

From the modest feeding regiment the OP describes (and from the smallish size of the fish of under 3' at 8 years), I think it has nothing to do with the overeating.

1. OP discounts the possibility of the RTC swallowing a foreign/inedible object. Are you absolutely sure? RTC are known to swallow heater guards, thermometers, decorations, etc. I'd massage his tummy a bit to see if I feel anything hard and shaped.

2. From reading all the info on this thread, I'd blame bread as the culprit. But having never fed my RTCs bread and never reading about any one else doing it, I can't be very sure. In any case, if the fish survives, please stop with the bread. RTCs are predators. They do take a fallen fruit in the wild too.

3. RTCs do get bloated sometimes and then it passes. Usually, keepers never know why.

4. It may have contracted a parasite, like an intestinal worm. Metronidazole, AFAIK, is largely an antiparasitic with some secondary antibiotic properties. But against worms, I'd recommend praziquantel - great stuff and safe too. Given often to cats and dogs too.

5. In one trustworthy study, high nitrates have been linked to a lazy digestion, bloating, and swimming bladder problems (float - just like your fish appears to suffer from) in goldfish.

6. Many RTCs have dark skin on their tummies. I've never heard of the RTC tummy color being linked with overeating. Yet, indeed, if the tummy does change color, it is a bad sign that the fish is experiencing GI problems.

Hope this helps. These are just my opinions. Good luck and keep us posted. I liked the suggestions of the laxative and anti-parasitic meds delivered by syringe directly into his tummy.

I sometimes use a gel tek that has prazi in it. Prazipro baths are great for external parasites. Also, like I said earlier, I'm just speaking from personal experience. My sister did have a red tail that swallowed a suction cup one time too... we treated him and it eventually passed.

Hi guys. Thanks for all the help but i did all i could for my RTC but unfortunately it didn't make it. I bought all the medicines and did everything to keep comfy as possible. I opened him in order to see what really happened and it's not a case of over-eating since nothing was inside its stomach but one organ was full of air though and the bloated part had internal bleeding since it was quite blackish. I still can't understand what happened to it but at for my recent 2 year old RTC i have a much broader knowledge on what to do now. Thanks a lot guys! I appreciate your support and tips.
