I recently bought a juvy rhombeus about 3 inches long and have him in a 30 gallon for the time being. He was fine for the first couple days I had him but has recently been sort of floating on his side. Not completely on his side but at about a 70 degree angle. Every now and then though he'll just dart around the tank for a few seconds, then return to floating at the angle. He is still eating. I changed the water today and waiting to see what happens. Anyone have any idea whats going on or what the problem is?

Any help is appreciated

Sounds like a problem with the swim bladder problem. Which is bad.

It could also be a bacterial infection. If it's that you could pick up some melafix or the like at your LFS.

If you haven't had it that long talk to the place where you got the fish.

honestly, if it's only sitting at a slight angle, i don't think there's a problem, i've seen plenty of fish do that, especially piranhas. i actually have a little rhom that i've had for months that does it pretty frequently. if you just got him, i would let him settle for a little bit and keep an eye on him, as long as you don't notice any other problems, there shouldn't be any reason to worry. i definitely wouldn't start dumping meds into your tank if that is your only symptom.

my pacu used to do that, it always worried me but i just realized he was a lazy one - nothing to worry about, you just have a lazy rhom

My Rhom did that when I got him, it's like he thinks you can't see him as well. Try providing more hiding spots and he should settle down.

I have heard or this before and my self had experienced this . when a Piranha
lyes on a angle like you say 70% it is typically a bad eye .(May not be the case for you) It would look up with its good eye and face the bad eye down at the ground . LOOK CLOSELY INTO ITS EYES REAL CLOSE , Can you tell any difference ?

my small 4" rhom does this. only when i approach the tank. his this back is less of a target than his broad side. fish also tend to swim this way when illuminated at an angle. in nature the light is always from above, so in captivity , room lights will throw him off a bit. i also have a 6-7" rhom that doesn't do this.but he isn't nervous at all either, and always comes up to investigate me when i approach his tank.don't worry, he's fine, just nervous and shy. more hiding spots and dim lighting should help. but don't be surprised if he acts that way for a LONG time. P's are notorious for taking forever to settle down.took almost a year for my sm. Rhom to eat in front of me and my sanchezi still hides non-stop after a year.

my healthy rhoms never did this but i had one come in the mail once and it started doing this and died the next day. i hope yours lives

i think its just a comfy position for them
i see alot of piranhas and fish doing this
just like everyone else said
