Help...sad..frustrated...confused..they all died..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think time to start with the obvious:

How old is the setup...if new, take a look at the topic "nitrogen cycle".

1) what is your ammonia level(test kits available just about everywhere fish are sold)
2) If it is nonzero and you still have fish in the tank, then don't get new fish. Use a little amquel to neutralize ammonia and wait out the nitrogen cycle(not long, maybe a week in a 10 gallon)
3) If all your fish died, consider doing the fishless cycle. google it.

I don't agree with that! Lol. My favorite thing about my livebearers fry is that I get to feed them to my big fish ;)

OP, don't get discouraged. It's a great hobby and the people on here will be glad to help you, as long as you're willing to take our advice.

That's because you're one of the only mfk girls on the planet. OP : Which kind of pleco was it? A common pleco could make lots of waste for your tank size and cause a problem.

Bro you need ammonia test kits and pH test kits, and a way to measure the temp. do water changes and dont let things get too dirty.

Dont be discouraged, take this from an advanced keeper:

Sometimes I set up a new tank and never have an issue with it,
rarely, one particular tank that I set-up cant keep anything alive. Bloody mystery!

It probably is one fundamental feature that you are overlooking. as stated previously, nicotine or other chemicals can do it. I am a smoker and when I do anything on my tanks I wash my hands thoroughly WITHOUT soap. I dont want to risk not washing the soap off good enough. My father killed off an entire 55 by using a supermarket sponge(chemicals built in). Only use items in the tank that you KNOW are safe.

Also, I would stock that tank very slowly and cautiously. Only buy a couple of fish to start, and then add more after weeks of no problems. Sometimes you just need to take it slow, keep trying, youll figure it out soon enough!

I know!! We need more MFK girls. Hot ones. Yeeppp, that's what we need. :)

And, I know common Plecos make a lot of waste(heck I have one) but I've also heard that it doesn't have as much of an effect on bio load since a lot of it is plant matter. True/false?

He is talking about his gf who is NOT into fish. totally different from an advanced keeper. My point was- raising livebearers can often be the first hook in developing an interest.
Plus if she likes it, he can give her the 10G to raise fry and upgrade his tank.

"Strateegery", as GWBush would say!

I Agree... my g/f one day came home with a bunch of fish fry from one of her old colleagues and she loved it... needless to say when she saw my then Palembangs laying eggs she was again really excited...

As for the OP, PLEASE DO NOT USE TEST STRIPS...

Test strips can be easily compromised if they aren't stored correctly and can end up giving you false readings...

Invest in a Liquid API Master Test Kit, it should come with all the necessary tests you'll need such as Ammonia, NitrAte, NitrIte and PH...

just be sure to read the instructions carefully, as one of the tests require you to shake the living crap out of the bottle before performing the test...
