help setting up a wet/dry

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you could remove the filter sock you could have a bit of wet/dry but probably wont be sufficient. I think you should fill the other side with as much media as you can, probably ceramic noodles and scrubbies.

The more the better and yes the scrubbies will go down as you pile more on top

An idea of media in a W/D:

I liberated this pic from cichlid-forum: art_diy_overflow_04.jpg

It is as close to yours as I could find quickly.

Basically you need more media, check out these filters http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66808&highlight=japanese+style
if you think you need a lot of media.

I would add two more baffles to your sump to create smaller sections for the ceramic and scrubbies.

So it would go:

1) down flow thru filter sock with blue filter at the bottom

2) up flow thru ceramic media (3" wide) and over baffle

3) down flow thru scrubbies under baffle to

4) return pump (just wider than pump) to tank.

I hope I'm confusing you (:D).

Thanks for all the input. I am going to take another look at this thing and see what it will take to install some more baffles. I now beginning to understand the concept. Its not just the volume of media, but how much media you can get each molecule of water to pass over.

i'm no aquarium guru, but this picture just screams 'freak accident waiting to happen' to me.

maybe suspend that power strip for a little peace of mind. it should have screw holes for hanging on the back of it.

Yeah, I know. Still working on it. My heaters are in the sump and I'm waiting to get it done up before I tie up the wiring.

i ain't a pro at this - but this type of setup is quite common here in asia from what i have seen - and commonly used by some serious fish keepers at that....as for whether or not it is more effective that this or that....who knows.....

my comments:(based on the fact that i think you have 2 compartments)

- take sponge out from under the sock (1st compartment)
- load that second compartment with as much ceramic as you can, if most of it is submerged, so be it - used eggcrate or something to leave a small area open near the outlet to place your heaters and just so that nothing clogs the outlet...
- sock is good, but needs frequent cleaning - i would put literally 10-20 sheets of filter floss about 3-4" down from the water inlet and then below that, some bio-media

40 gallon sump with bio-balls, you could make yours work like this most likely?

Size of tank doesn't matter.. bio load matters. I would do a sump like you have and a md size canister filter. You also may want to take the T out of the return line. You're greatly decreasing your flow with it.. TRy to get a Y. Also put the temp controller probes to your heaters in the tank, not the sump. It will work the way you have it, with the pot scrubbers floatting, but it's not the best. You could just add a few bags of lava rock into it.
