Looks like nice color for a Mayan. They have it as red terror. Could it be mixed? I have a female so I'm looking for a male. Is there any demand for Mayans if I try to breed?

It's probably a male. They are more colorful, pointier fins and get larger. It looks pure Mayan. They really vary in color based on location. Some are more red, some yellowish or orangish in color. Certainly a gorgeous fish!

The name "red terror" is interchangeable with uropthalmus and festae, a reason why common names generally not used if you want to be sure what you are getting.
Females usually have a dark blotch in the dorsal fin.
You can tell the females in my video below by the very prominent blotches.

Oh yes, I read they are deemed "false red terror". So you don't think this one has enough of a blotch? I wasn't sure if maybe it just wasn't dark at the moment like the bars.

It seems festae are more in demand for their coloring and probably command more money. Any idea what a good price for this Mayan would be? I'm hesitant to pay too much, introduce it to the female and then they not get along and I'll have to get rid of one.

Thanks for the input

i think mayans are pretty awesome fish but i also think that people aren't too happy when they end up with a mayan instead of a festae... maybe that answers your question about whether they are in demand or not haha

Haha. I can see that. The Mayan I have was labeled red tiger mota. I knew it wasn't and only bought it cuz she was so "ugly" at that moment and was stuck in a little tank and all torn up with really bad split in tail, dorsal and one pectoral fin. She has definitely grown on me. :)

In Florida, they can be found in almost any canal south of Naples, so it really depends where you are.
And the above poster is right about many people wanting festae more.
I personally find Mayan's equally as interesting (if not more), but you may find worth is in the eye of the beholder. When I had a spawning pair in the midwest, I couldn't give them away, and when I auctioned the pair off (10" male, 6" female), the pair fetched $5. But then again if you find that 1 in a million person who has wanted 1 forever, well .......
