Help sexing 3 inch Salvini

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the responses. She does have very pronounced colouring and it has definitely got better over the last couple of weeks.

I brought her from a little lfs over here in England so i am not to sure on her catch location.

What i do find unusual is that she was in a tank of about 20 one inch salvinis (clearly all from the same batch) but there were about 3 or 4 that stood out to me due to their size being some what larger, so i was almost convinced she was going to be a male!

ah ok, well she looks very nice! good vibrant colors. if she ends up with a lot more red in her make sure to send an updated pic xD

Size is really not a sure fire gender ID source, females often grow up faster and mature early.
I picked up a group of 6 V bifacsiatum, 5 grew very fast, double the rate of one I thought might be a runt. The 5 largest turned out to be female, when I separated the runt to its own tank, it turned to be the male, and when isolated away from the females, grew very quickly, and later fathered many spawns.

definitely agree on size. I've raised two different groups of salvini now and both times the females were larger through the juvenile phase, just as a result of them being more confident earlier and getting more food. the males always passed the females midway (sometimes with separation)

I'm sure it can easily happen with other cichlids as well as you say.
