I currently have two 19" silver aros, 18" green aro along with an Oscar and small motoro rays in my 200 gallon. For a year now every thing has been fine, but 2 weeks ago one of the silvers has started attacking the lids of the tank (trying to escape). Its barbels are still intact however there is a callous developing on the lips which hits the plexiglass covers.
It's has refused to eat of late (diet mainly shelled market shrimp & mealworms) and sits on the bottom of the tank.

I assumed water problems at first and increased my water changes but nothing has worked. If there was a real problem my motoros would be showing some kind of stress however they are as fat and happy as ever. All the other fish are perfect and eating well.

I've reduced the hours that I have on the lighting and use day-light coming in from the nearby patio doors. Everyone knows not to spook any of the fish so this is very troubling. My wife thinks the Aro has gone mad.

If anyone has had any experience with this behaviour please advise. I'll try to post pics later.

Cheers

I'd check your ph, and I don't think its unusual for this type of fish to get spooked...mine did when he was younger, and every now and then gets spooked and jumps and hits the top of the tank...if he hasn't eaten in a long time, i'd try feeders...good luck, and keep us posted

Live foods are usually good at returning an animal to normal feeding habits, just make sure the feeders are healthy, because if they are sick, any disease they might have could be passed on to your fish.

its probably getting spooked from the other 2 aros.. u should leave the green solo and the 2 silvers in the pond like dragonboi said

Here are few photos of the mad aro. His obsession with squeezing through the cracks in the tank lid hasn't stopped, and his barbs are biginning to shows signs of real damage. The other tankmates seem to ignore him now however my wife and I can't stand the intermittent thrashing especially at night:nilly:

Make sure there is no stray voltage going into the tank.

Will do. It's just strange that he's the only one in the tank that's behaving this way. I got all 3 aros at the same time, and they've been housed with the Oscar for a year now with not the slightest problem.

i will have to look into finding him a larger home whether with me or someone else if that's the problem. Thanks
