  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just a thought Liz, but if you wanted to keep them in your pond, you should probably introduce them to it within the next few months. That way they will get use to your pond and won't try to escape like they would if you were to introduce them later in life as adults.

I think your right after they grow awhile though ..wayyy to tiny to chance it now.. i feed them tiny bit every few hours and clean their water right after.. they are doing great and getting so use to me.. they look up at me and wait for their tiny morsel to drop in.. they are soooooo cute.. i have not seen any more..so glad i have two.. makes it nice for them.

Little up date picture..doing great!

they will be with me for many years.. crazy about them..so any good ideas on set ups and pics of yours are welcome..another up dated pic of the boys.. :D

Looking good Liz :)

Not sure how big you want to go re: tank, painteds don't get as big as the various sliders that people keep around here, you could probably get away with something like a 40BR for 2. I kept a trio of painteds in a tank that was somewhere in the 65G range, the footprint was around 40"x20" and they did just fine. In that setup I ran a fluval 404 and it kept things very clean, and I used large (2" or so) river rocks for substrate because I hate the look of bare bottom. Their basking platform was actually a couple of flat rocks on top of a milk crate, the crate was on its side so the turtles could swim under the platform and didn't lose any tank space. You'll want them to get UVB either via a temporary outdoor pool (that's what I do with my baby turts but I'm in Florida now and can take advantage of the nice weather) or a UVB tube like the ZooMed iguana lights.

What are they eating? Painteds are pretty largely carnivorous, especially as babies, so best bet is to get them on a qualiry hatchling growth pellet staple and supplement with small insects, worms, and chopped fish. Keep those pics coming, they should grow pretty quickly in the first year.

They are eating frozen krill and frozen blood worms... i am making a fish food order up so i am glad you mentioned the hatchling growth pellet.. yes i want to definitly add that as the staple and the other stuff as a treat... do you have any pics of your set up with the crates etc so i can see it.. i will always be taking pics of these cuties.. i can see they have grown already in the last two weeks ..and thanks so much for the great info ... now i feel pretty good that i am not blind about what they will require both present and future..thanks

Sorry no pics, I don't have those turts anymore :( It was just a regular milk crate standing on its side so it didn't take up tank space. There were some threads in here awhile back about DIY turtle docks/basking platforms that I was thinking of trying, right now my turtles are in a big rubbermaid until they get a bigger tank.
