I have a 1100g pond stocked with koi.
I have battled algae in the past, with my UV filter being the most effective way of clearing it up. In the past I have been able to flip on my UV and within 3-5 days its crystal clear.

About 4-5 weeks ago the water was looking pretty green, and it was starting to warm up here in ohio, so I did a 50-60% water change (first since October/November) sucking up as much junk off the bottom as possible.
The water was obviously still green after that, so I put on the same UV filter that I always have, which had the bulb replaced at the end of last summer, so that shouldnt be the issue. And i check the pump daily for clogs and other problems, and its working just fine.

The algae is growing on the sides and bottom, on my filter hose, ect.
Its green not the black algae, and its pretty slimy, maybe 1/8" thick all over everything, as well as all of the water being green. The pond is 2.5' deep and its all green, but I can only see to maybe 18" down most days.

Anyhow, since I put the UV on, I have seen a tiny bit of improvement, some days it looks better and some days worse ... and like i said before, usually its crystal clean within a week. (its been so bad in the past that i literally couldnt see 3-4" deep, and within the week its been clear as glass)

In the past i've also tried using algae killing chemicals without much luck (basically no O2 in the water :() so i would prefer not to go that route. But if that is the only way, how do i make sure that i am oxygenating the water enough? The pond is 1100g (16 x 4 x 2.5 deep) and it runs through my filter, through my UV, and out a PVC return thats 3" diameter at 2000gph so it agitates the surface pretty well.

Lastly, I also thought maybe I should just cover the whole thing in plywood, so no light gets in for a while? Would that work? And if so how long should it take?

Thanks

Have you cleaned the quartz sleave? If not the UV bulb will not be strong enough. Even if it appears clean it should be cleaned at least once per season.I used muriatic acid to clean my quartz sleave.Use caution!!!! do not inhale!!!

What's the water temp?

There will be more biological activity once water temps are above 60. Avoid using any chemicals, natural bacteria can be added that will help break down any left over organic matter still in the pond. UV will only work on the free floating algae so maybe it is just a dirty sleave as oldfish said. And always inhale...

i have not checked the water temp lately, but about 2 weeks ago it was running about 66 i believe, but our local weather has been cooler since then

as for the quartz sleeve, i had no idea that was even an option ... clean the inner part of it or the outter?
where can i get the acid? and how do i go about cleaning the sleeve?

You clean the outer side of the sleave(the part touching the water). It gets a build up on it that appears clear but blocks some of the uv rays. I think you can get muraitic acid at swimming pool supply or hardware store. To clean take a peice of pvc pipe just big enough in diameter than the sleave and cut it 1" longer than the sleave than cap one end.Now you have a sheath for the sleave. Stick the sheath in the ground at a 45 degree angle open end up. Put the sleave into the sheath while pouring the acid over the sleave and into the sheath until sheath is full. Move the sleave in and out a couple of times then dip or rince in fresh water. Your done! I repeat use caution and do not breath the fumes!!!!!

going to get acid tonight
not a huge fan of plants, but i will look around a little bit and see what i can find

bump for more opinions ...

I've used barley straw before on my old pond and it worked, but it only works if you keep buying it. I had to replace it once every 2 months.

went and picked up acid today from lowes and cleaned the sleeve.
also i have been "straining" the water as it comes back to the pond ... running it through a very fine landing net that is taking a lot of the particles out

so i guess we will see where that gets me

i am also in the process of setting up a 55g drum filled with media as my filter ... so i am going to run it without media for a few days and see if some of the junk will settle to the bottom and then i can clean that out as well
i dont want to add the media (mainly bioballs) until my water is clearer, because they will just become a slimey mess
