Help stocking a 270 gal

Ditto on the 2' width. Its really limiting me too. The 8 foot length will help alot for more active fish but you don't want the fish to have trouble turning around. Its hard to suggest anything without knowing exactly what you like. Personally, I really like the idea of having a clown knife with a few larger cichlids.

I'm open to cichlids...I have had many in th epast...what would you suggest if I were to house some with fire eels and a clown?

Agreed, lima cat, bichirs. The 2' width will be tough for an arowana unless you got lucky with a non-murdering jardini. I'd want some big mid-water fish in there, maybe a big cichlid like a bocourti.

How hard are bigger bichirs to come by? any harm to house with eels?

Since you have the 500g available, I would recommend a black aro. Also for some cichlids maybe go with some geophagus, eartheaters are nice looking and much easier for communities.

i know this is a stupid question but are asian aros still illegal in alaska? because if they are legal in canada then they should be legal in alaska... if they are not you could get a few of those...

GG's tend to get aggressive once they reach adulthood, and have been known to kill all of their tankmates, so I wouldn't risk it.

Depends on where you are. And no, they do fine with eels.

I don't think pbass would be avery good choice to go with eels...
