Maidstone-20121110-00497.jpgMaidstone-20120105-00344.jpgHey all, my new tank is finally arriving on the 5th of dec... Whoop! I've made my stand and covered it in black perspex have black perspex for the lid and am all ready to go! The tank is 7ft long 34inches from front to back and 2ft high, here's my dilema. Currently I have a slate bottom in my 6x2x2 in the way of roofing slates layed flat and as far as maintanance goes its great, but my cichlids seem a bit lost without anything to dig up. I have enough coral sand in my garage to have a thin layer but last time it was blocking my fx5, jamming the motor every month or two! I'm running twin fx5's on the new tank... Should I use the sand, go for the slate again or a plain glass bottom? With the glass or slate you can set the fx5 inlet low. And never have to suck gravel as it collects everthing, as you all know rearranging and maintaining sand can be a pain, also its a right pain if you decide to remove it!!! What would you do?Maidstone-20120607-00033.jpg

All I will say about slate is you need a flat bottom in the tank, my new one has a double layer bottom making it flat inside. My current tank has bracing and the void under the slate fills with crap so you have to lift it all the time to suck it up!

Yea I had slate for a while now but I miss the fish having something to dig up... Can't beat glass slate or similar for easy cleaning tho, dunno if 'I'm gonna suffer extra maintanance for the joy of watching the fish wreck my lovely landscaped bottom' or not yet lol!

I just installed slate in my 4' 120G. The only thing I wish I would have done different is bought 2 24" slabs instead of 12"ers. Sand is a PITA to clean. I like easy cleaning lol!

I know a lot of people with larger tanks opt for easy cleaning options, will you miss your bass digging though? Lol

PEA GRAVEL .....very shallow (1-2 inch):)

Ecoll, how come you never clean it? Well placed power heads? My cichlids create massive craters so its near impossible to keep a crap free bottom!
