Yes and the movement of the fish help as well...the first picture is the dirtiest spot of my tank at the dirtiest time(when all the fish are not active yet). And the second picture is other section of the tank at that same time...a couple of hours after I turn on the light, most of the crap would disappear. Note this is over a year of not touching the sand...

Does it not jam your filter, my fx5 has stopped twice due to sand, have to dismantle it to get to the motor! My midas alone would move all that sand to one end in a day though lol!

sand vote for me. i like the look and the fish like it as well.

no votes for clown puke petco rock colors? hehehehe

Lol, nah, clown pukes never good... So how does the crud get up to your filter if its on the top? Am I missing something here?? Lol...

My comment was directed at a design difference between fx5 and eheim...

FX5's pump is at the bottom of the filter so it makes auto priming easy; but it clogs more easily because sand will get into the pump if it get sucked up...eheim's pump is at the top of the filter...it makes priming harder, but the sand has to travel through all the media to get to the pump so it is harder for it to affect the pump; esp heavier sands.

I vote for sand. I have an fx5 on my 240 which has a sand bottom and cichlids digging but I never get sand in the motor. Maybe you should try a heavier sand rather than crushed coral?

Pool filter sand is my vote. Long as you wash it well the grains are heavy and dont stay suspended in the water column when your fish stir it up. You could also put a prefilter on your filters intake to keep any stray pieces from getting sucked in.

Ok thanks all good advise there, I'm now leaning towards a heavier sand or fine gravel... Fx5 design flaw there!-)
