Help !! TIG is acting weird ..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what size is the tig ?

i have found when they get to 12-13inch they just die for no reason

the one i have now is the only one i have been able to keep alive for longer than 10 months it chould be down to heavy organics that are makeing them sick

i have had no problems at all since i have been using polyfilter in my inturnal filters and my tig has grown well to 20inch

the hunt for the reason why tigs look great one day and go belly up the next is a mystry which no one has a strong case of proving

all i know is the polyfilter is working great for me so i wont stop using it

the wound in his mouth healed.

He still not eating. I've tried MP, bllodworms, hai feng and no success...

He still swims awkwardly..upside down, on its side..some time he just lays on his side.

He started to swim to the surface as he's suffocating for more oxygen. there's plenty of oxygen in the tank with a huge turnover rate.

I started to notice that his whiskers are shorter that before and his dorsal fin was chopped off like he got into a fight with other fish. So I am going to setup a camera to run all night and I'll check it out tmw afternoon. If other fish do bother him, I am gonna setup another tank just for him...

PS: he's about 15" long.

I just did another 30 % water change, last 30% was last sunday.

All the MP that I buy are in the seal brand, plus I always wash them before hand then dip it in garlic enhancer before feeding.

Thanks for the support guys, I hope he pulls through as well.

not much of a tig expert but here's my story...

got a tig at 8", joined with my 180 with a divider. eats great, my bichir went overboard and was rough on him. got bloody on the nose, wiskers cut, tail also got cut... basically he was sentence to die.

i got my 10 gal with an established sponge filter, transfered him, bought melaflix, temp at 78. 2x rena 400 airpump (highly oxygenated for a 10 gal tank).

my market shrimp are from unsealed display fresh water headless type bought at asian stores. I would freeze them first to kill all types of organisms. I was them quick and take a couple for my tig and 180 tank munching machine fishes.

cut and de-vein the market shrimp. after almost 1 month tig is still lying upside down but no wounds and wiskers and tail are healing. eating but puking it out 1 out of 3 times. i first needed to insert the shrimp (force it down on him) to feed him). now he's better but still need to put the shrimp on his mouth.

it has been almost 2 months and he's recovering. swims upside down ( i think the tank is small for him).

i change water 90% every 3 days. (this is not a joke....) i would drain the water up to his body's capacity and put new straight tap water (i have a whole home filter for taking out all the bad stuff---(some people thought i was a stupid idea and commented until the toilet flush---but it works great for my fish and my house).

this is my experience, and he is still alive and kicking... i believe they are strong fish and unlike other people who i have talked to told me they are too sensitive... tell me all about it.... 90% change? tigs are tough but we still do not know too much about them.

I change water on my 60 gal at 80% every 3 days and 50% once a week on my 180. all depends on filter and how you feed them (did you need this comment... just wanted to share):D

good luck... how i look at it... they live in the wild.... and there are all sorts of dirt and micro-organism... in home tanks it's too clean (maybe for them). I don't know just my opinion. :D

Rigth now, he' laying upside down..breathing very heavily.

I took some pics of his fin, it looks like the parrott cichilds was picking on him. The PC were about 1.5 - 2.5 inches and he's 15"

I am going to put him separately on 20 gallon extra tank that I have for now...I know it's small, but I have no other tank.

Here's what I am planning to do...I want to get some more opinions from you guys.

1. Setup the 20 gallon QT tank.

2. Fill up 10 gallon from the main display tank and 10 gallon new water that I will start to aerate tonight with seachem prime and aquarium salt

3. Setup my Emperor 400 HOB filter with an established bio filtration.

4. Use whisper 100 air pump (should be way more that he needs)

5. Keep temp at 82 degrees.

Anything else I should watch for ? I am staying up all night tonight to make sure he'll be okay and not get pick on until I can get everything setup tomorrow

My catfish did the same thing several years ago. He stopped eating, was laying at the bottom of the tank gasping, etc. My husband and I of course did what any fishkeeper with some experience would do and tested the water with our master kit and it was within normal levels. I don't remember what they exactly were because it was several years ago. Then we did a 25 percent water change, the next morning we did another 25 percent. There was still no change in his behavior or eating habits.

That night we started noticing the redness on his fins and abdomen and we thought that the other tankmates were picking on him at first. We removed his tankmates (he was far too big to move into our quarantine tank) and I started looking on the internet for fish diseases. With my medical background and the information I found, I diagnosed him with bacterial septicemia (please notice it was bacterial and not viral). I treated him with tetracycline as directed by the package. We also added several airstones and a couple of powerheads. It was expensive, but well worth it. Within the first 12 hours or so of treatment, he started swimming again, not breathing as heavily, and even ate a few of his pellets. It took about 3-4 days for the redness to go away.

As it turns out that his tank had a slight ammonia spike for some reason and that weakened him enough to be infected by the bacteria, while it didn't effect his tankmates noticeably. Our master test kit, though it was only a month old, was bad.

The second set of pictures you posted looks exactly like what my catfish had and I can even see some streaking in the abdomen area. Though I can't say for certain this is what ails your fish, it is certainly worth looking into for him or her. If this is what is happening to your fish, it is important that you treat him or her quickly as this is disease can do a lot of damage. Good luck and I wish you and your fish the best.

Thanks fo the reply guys...

My question now is as suggested by gmail1621,

Can I mix tetracylene and melafix together ? I already does the tank with melafix...I am wondering if I should does it with tetracylene as well ?

After a long hard battle, my "miller" (brand name of a TIG welder) died...

I just setup the QT tank earlier today and was letting it run for at least 12 hours before I put him in there. I doubt it made any difference if I was to move him earlier.

I also noticed an internal bleeding all over the walls inside his mouth. I did put some tetracyline at 2 pm today.

This is the worst day of my lfie when it comes to fishkeeping. I am so proud of him and always showcasing him around. I can careless about the money I spent to buy him and feed him...the fact that he's gone really hits me.

I am not even sure if I am ready for another one...it will never be the same again, but I'll get over it soon enough.

Now, what do I do with him ? I really hate throwing the lifeless body away, I know this sounds nut if not crazy, but has anyone use a taxidermy service for freshwater fish ? I know they do on bass and crappies, but a tig ? I guiess I am gona keep him in a freezer tonight and cal around local taxidermy tmw.

This sucks...
