get dwarf gouramis or two larger size gouramis like pearl or blue/gold. Large gouramis are mean to each other. Focus more on the lighting as that's what makes plants grow you know the whole photosynthesis thing, and i use KENT plant food for freshwater once a week after i change out the water in the tank. Don't use undergravel filter and the plants take care of bio-waste anyway. The canister that you do have will be enough for mechanical as well as additional biofiltration. Can't recommend Vallisneria enough for fast growing and tough plant. I even have it in my outdoor pond for the gold fish. The lights i have are all compact flourescents. If you want showy plants, try Amazon, or Annubias. Java fern or moss are also tough plants that can even survive in brackish water but grow really slow.
