Hi Guys,

I went away for the weekend to find out one of my Dats died and another one has white spots and starting to get cloudy eyes at the bottom of the both eyes.

Tank mates are, another 7 dats (no signs of ich), 2 archers, 1 fire fox and 1 Pleco.

Tank is 72 gal, fresh water.

After my research here are the options I took, however sinces this is my favourite site and forum, I'll decided based on your opinion and help.

1. My best option is aquarium salt, and I was thinking about adding 1 table spoon for every 10 gals. This is the choice I prefer, but I am worried for the pleco. (But I am really interested in having my dats and the archers on brackish water).

2. I read "rid ich" medication is safe for Dats and won't harm the pleco, but not sure if anyone else have used it before.

In any case I will make a 25% water chage before treatment.

Any help and input will be greatly appretiated.

Better not to us meds if you don't have to. Add salt (pleco should be fine) as 1 table spoon per 10 gallons will not be considered brackish. Also raise the temp.

As far as converting your tank to brackish... Make sure you do your research, as not all Dats are brackish.

quick cure works.. turns the water blue though for a little while...
i recommend what the person above said. safest, easiest, and effective.

i just got through with ick on my tigers, thins and silver also and all i did was raise the temp to about 84 and added salt. in a couple of days it was gone. the only thing i recommend is that you keep up with the regiment of salt, temp and water changes about 2 weeks after the ick is visibly gone on the dats, so that you kill off the whole ick process. good luck.

Thanks all for your reply, I did a 25% water change yesterday, added 10 table spoons of aquarium salt (to a 72gal tank) and temp is now 84F. My sickest Dat seems to be recovering, the cloudy eyes were quite clearer this morning.

When should I make another water 25% change? is it everyday? and obviously I'll add salt just for the portion of the water being replaced.

Thanks for your help guys, this forum rocks!

Everyday can't hurt, especially considering you are doing smaller water changes.
