In the live-fish imitating exercise that Tig Phish is alluding to, I use a cotton thread, not fishing line, and tie it lightly so the "bait" is easily removed by your target predator.

I think I'll have to try my chances with the tilapia strips. They'll get hungry enough or they'll simply be out of luck.
They should break sooner or later.
As stated, having competition from other fish provides "in-situ teachers" and usually helps speed up food recognition.
