Can you get seachem matrix there (if a new canister doesn't come already packed with media)? I think you'd be much happier with it in the long run.

How much seachem matrix do you put in your cannisters? What about purigen? I run sumps and cannisters on my bigger tanks so I usually don't worry about the media in my cannister.

I'm not sure how much. usually put less of the coarse mech in than recommended, fill the rest with matrix, except enough room at top for some floss & purigen.
the reason I like matrix is it's porosity, in which BB remains just as viable after filter rinsing.
I never have problems after robbing the canister to start new ones, either.

right, hoepfully it hasnt done any more harm bits nearly full after a 60% change, its a little clearer but im sure it wont last.

i got a brand new fx6 (ouch) which ive needed for ages anyway! it had two bags of ceramic rings enough for half a basket, i then filled the bottom basket and topped of the other with the eheim balls and a spare thick sponge pad. (they came with an old ehiem pro 3 and looked the same in the shop so thats what they are!-) cheers evz) the top basket had 2x black sponges (carbon pads?) in between those i added a layer of fine cotton wool sponge.

i then filled the filter with tank water, added enough bb bacteria (in a bottle) to start an 1800l tank, then dosed with nutrafin clearstart which the lfs said would clump all the crud together and help it collect in the filters....

fish actually look a bit happier atm although ive not seen either of the two festae since last night! even when the water was right down? tank mis now too cloudy to look so thinking i shoulda got in there when the water was low to find/ remove them if they are gonnas.... gonna have to find em aint i....

both festae are dead, male measured at 10 inch, female at 9 inch....

the crud is clumping together and the tank is looking alot clearer, all the fish are looking much happier less gasping and more active. if this flares up again im sure i will lose more of em...

Wow mate sad news about your festae , we've both been outa luck with tanks this weekend , hope it all sorts itself out soon enough for ya asap , you got any live sponges to throw in new FX out of existing filters ?
I've just been out and bought hose and all the connectors to try my flush the FX from the bottom tap idea , straight down the grid with another hose in top from mixer tap in kitchen , ill let you know how it works out later

Cheers dude, grew them from 2 inch! I forgot to add sponge from my 35 but tbh I dont know what good it will do at this point, just fingers crossed it Improves here on... if it goes down hill again I think I will lose every thing, unless I throw a select few in the 35 with the 3 inch caribe.

Whats been going on with your tank mate, was it losing the ray?

Fx5 thing? Are you gonna attempt to clean it with out opening it in situ?
