HELP!! White, Stringy material

I just noticed that some of my large cichlids were getting sluggish and poor appetite recently, and two of them have these white growth on them. At first I thought it was ick but on closer inspection they look more like fungus of some sort. It is mostly on the fins and near the head region. How do I get rid of this? I just fed them a large amount of chopped up smelt last week, but forgot to throughly clean them(I usually rinse the smelt out many times before feeding). Could this be the problem? I never had fungus infections before and I am not even sure if it is fungus Please Help. Thanks

arow i would clean up the tank , check your parameters and dose up on salt.
Ive had fungus issues when my tank is not up to spec ... perfect water and salt is all i need.
 
ekk looks like a mild case of ICK check all your water parameters because an outbreak of ICK usually has an underlying cause. established fish rarely get it for no reason.

Possible causes

Water chemistry
New fish
feeder fish
temp. change( usually temp drop)

Good luck they look big and healthy they should fight it off easy with your help. Check the fish disease section to make a positive ID of the disease and find out good treatment methods

Im going to go the other way on this....if you sure its not ich, its a bacterial infection. I cant tell due to th epictures not being in focus. True fungal outbreaks are very rare. Im not a fan of salt--When you have a cold, do you stick with Echinacea or do you use Sudafed, etc? I mild drug that will get rid of this type of bacterial infection is Furanase.
