Help with 220 Gallon Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At least a sheet of 3/4" plywood. If your tanks bottom pane will sit directly on the trim, you should use a layer of foam to evenly allocate the weight of the water, eliminate imperfections in the surface of the stand. If your tanks bottom pane is suspended in plastic trim or similar, the foam is not necessary. Post a pic of the bottom of the tank if you can and I can give you a better opinion.
No plastic trim. I don't have a picture at the moment but it's glass everywhere

this debate will never end, but I have always been on the "nothing between your tank and your stand, especially if the tank has a floating bottom"

I contacted Aqueon directly about my 150g from them (also sits on a tube steel stand) and they said nothing, styro can create an uneven edge that can lead to a cracked bottom - according to them.

lots of people insist you need styrofoam though.
It's a good point to contact the company itself. I will check with mine as well.

Also want to do a DIY led light but contemplating about this . May be Current USA or what else is good ?

I like my current usa orbit marines. I'm going to purchase some more for my next big fowlr build. They are kind of a "middle of the road" or "entry level" option for saltwater fishleeping.

But if you're planning on staying freshwater there are much more economical options. I've used the fluval aquaskys on an array of freshwater tanks, and now am trying them on a fowlr tank. They are designed to be bluetoothed up to an app that operates on a phone or tablet, programmable with a lot of control on light levels and schedule. I've heard good things about finnex lights as well, but no experience with them.

Amazon usually has the most competitive price point on these, but sometimes petsmart will have them at a really good sale price.

I would use a sheet of 3/4 inch plywood on the stand with at least 1/2 inch sheet of styrofoam on the plywood then the tank on the styrofoam.
The plywood gives you even support and the styrofoam will eliminate pressure points.

I have a 220 without the bottom trim on a diy wood stand that’s been setup like this for 10 plus years without issue.
