Anything fish, are you referring to tempered or un-tempered glass?

I am referring to plate or float glass in my posting about the 30” limit of ½” glass, not tempered glass.

Often tempered glass will have information about the tempering and manufacturer name stamped in a corner, look carefully.

Tempered glass is stronger and will stand up to more water pressure; however I do not know of any charts showing the safety margins. I would love to see one.

Further, if tempered glass should break the entire window will disintegrate into glass fragments and all the water and fish will spill out on the floor. With plate glass there is most often a crack which may leak some but will likely retain enough water to preserve your fish collection.

great information anything fish. i have a few questions about your 2400 tank. what is the size of the glass panel you used, what is the dimension that you can see into the tank, and what is the dimension of the water inside?

the strength of the glass is so questionable. i think i will build a tank frame with the glass and line it with pond liner to test the glass.

yea www.garf.org says two inches at 1 inches deep, they are an excellent source be sure to use them

??? All I find is their DIY Aquarium calculator but that stops at 96 wide (and then only 24" tall).

even my glass thickness calculator is saying that the safety factor would be 0.712 and people use 3.8 as their safety factor.

Just for clarification, a safety factor of less than 1 means that it will fail. Safety factor is calculated by dividing the design load by the actual load.

For example a safety factor of .712 is saying that you designed something that will hold 712lb. when the actual load is 1000lb. (not saying that those are the actual numbers, just saying that's the ratio)
