Help with a Saxatilis ID

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gees this is really driving me nuts. I can't find a single picture of another sveni or frenata that looks the same. It never bothered me before, its killing me now.

I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring and suggest it is a juvi male Lepidota.

It looks just like my old male Lepidota before the female had enough of him....

at 7 inches... id consider that past the juvi stage.

gonna throw something crazy out there. frenata/sveni hybrid???

im gonna have to agree and go sveni that missed the gene for the splotches.

:nilly:Doh! i must read the post rather than looking at the pretty pikes!!!

For the last year he's been in a 110 with lots of other s/c american cichlids. About 2 months ago I seqregated them into 90 s american and 110 central american. He has allways looked the way he does there I see a pink hue to his scales under the lateral line the lateral line but only occasionally. He's not overly aggresive but aside from my salvinis ran the show in the big tank.

I thought about a hybrid too (I really hope not). I found out that it came from africa northwest a local supplier and don't know anything else about it. I was considering getting ahold of them to see if they keep records but the shop ordered me in 3 belly crawlers I gave the two that looked the same to my friend and they turned out to be belly crawlers I kept the odd ball to see what it turned into. I dident know this was going to be such a tough guy to id.

Keep the suggestions coming and let's see if we can come to an agreement. I think so far sveni seems to be the overall concenses. Thanks for all the input.

Africa Northwest? Nah, they won't know ... trust me. :nilly:

If they came in with/as bellycrawlers, as someone mentioned, sveni is the best bet. They came in from Colombia, so that narrows down the possible species.

Yup, you order C. Sveni or C. "Belly Crawler" you pretty much have a 50/50 chance of getting the ones you wanted, if you order a bunch. . . you will almost always get both! A few years ago, the Belly Crawlers were very popular in my area, I had done the belly crawlers, so, I went around to all of the good LFS and scooped up the sveni from all of them. Sveni is still probably my fav overall pike. . . What ever that guy is. . . would be neat to figure it out. BTW I highly doubt it's a hybrid, it's tough enough to get pikes spawning with their own kind!

I just got ahold of my buddy who got one of the other two and he said his is a four lined pike I don't know what that is but its 12 inches long. It came in with mine and a real belly crawler I'm working on getting a pic of it. I will try to get it up when I get it. Man 3 diffrent fish sent as one spieces. That's funny.

I will add I've never seen defined splotches on him. He was a little stressed in those pics but it has always been a line running the length of the body. And then sometimes the line is absent from the middle of the body compleatly. While in this patern there is a eye spot in front of the tail fin and another behind the gill plate, and a stripe from the back of the gill cover to the nose. I do see how it looks like splotches kinda ran together though.

Hey do you remember the time I said that? Well I've been watching this fish like a hawk (my wife is mad about it I guess I've been sitting infront of my 90 gallon for two days now). And I saw it get chased by my female green terror (she has fry) he whiped around and in an instant all those really really faint black/brown spots on the top of the lateral line got dark and he locked with her. That's the first time I ever saw him turn that pattern. I ran to get my phone (witch is on the charger because I've been on this thread since it started) to get a picture and of course back to normal. To me I am convinced that I have a poorly colored sveni. Thank you all for your help and if I ever figure out how to post pics from my phone to this site I will try to get one in this pattern. Once again big thanks to peanut_power your awsome man. And thanks to everyone with all of your thoughts. I'm sure you will see me in this section again. I had no idea there were so many rad pikes. I'm gonna go look for a new one this weekend. I will try to figure out the pic thing and post a pic of whatever I get and my sveni in the appropriate thread.
