Help with adding new african cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks guys for all the help! I noticed this morning that the convict was picking on some of them, but nothing too mean. And like you said, this is sometimes a good thing. Right now I only have a 20 gallon tank with 5 fish in it. Convict - 2", Yellow Lab - a little 2", johanni - 1.5", Kenyi - 1.5", and duboisi 1.5". I think the reason why there is so much tension is because of the small tank. I am going to upgrade my tank to a 40 gallon as soon as I get enough money for the tank and all the equipment. A 40 gallon is the biggest tank I can get for the space I have to put it in, but I really cant wait until I can get it and make my fish happy. I am thinking that when I get the new tank setup and ready this is when I will add some new fish so that I can add them in a larger group. How many fish would you recomend housing in a 40 gallon tank if all the cichlids got to be around 4-5" each?

I also think I just found out who may have killed my new fish. The Tropheus duboisi. He was the one that chased the little guys like crazy when I put them in. Much more than any of the other fish were. Today I was just doing a little bit of research on them to find out more information, and I found out that they are extremley aggressive (much more than the mbuna) and it said that you should never add new fish once a Tropheus duboisi has been in his tank for more than 2 weeks because they will kill anything that enters his tank. I also read on another site that they have stronger and larger teeth than most other africans. So... I think I have found my problem. I am kind of sad about this, because I really like his coloration, but if he is going to be eating my other fish than he must go. I also read that they shouldnt really be mixed with other types of species and they should be kept with their own, and once they get bigger they will get more aggressive and sometimes kill all the fish in the tank :(

After keeping cichlids a long time I've noticed that Americans and African cichlids can get along quite fine, if given the sufficient space.

Good point. What size tank are we talkin here? You are also supposed to remove all the fish when re-arranging.this really confuses them and (at least temporarily breaks their aggression),but it sounds like they are too small. It's better sometimes to add bigger fish, because the others will not want to challenge, but usually best to follow procedure and add same size fish.good luck!maybe try peacocks-they are less mean

Well one of them is a 120gal with a green terror, frontosa, a couple of peacock malawis, venustus, and a pair of convicts... The venustus being most dominant.
