Put your lights on a timer. For now, I would go with 7 hours a day. When you get rid of your algae problem, you can try increasing it. But I personally would not leave them on for more than 8 hours a day.
Lights are on a timer, I have now set them to only be on for 8 hours a day.
I will do a water change and get all the algae off the glass today. Should I just to a regular water change or a large one?
I have zero experience with fertilizer so I think for now I would like to stay away from it if possible. The plants seem to grow fine on their own right now. Are these fertilizers something that csn be picked up at the local fish store or would I have to order it online?
Thanks

I would change at least 50% every day, or every other day until the algae is gone.
If you plants are growing OK now, I would not mess with ferts. If you get to the point where you want to start dosing ferts, buy dry. The liquid ones are watered down dry ferts and cost a lot more. http://www.aquariumfertilizer.com/
Ok, I did a regular water change. I will do another tomorrow.
Ya the plants are growing pretty good so far so I think I will leave the fertilizers for now. Thanks for the link I will be sure to read up on them a bit for use in the future.
If you dont want to use ferts / Co2, it might be a good idea to buy a bottle of seachem excel, its kind of a Co2 supplement which is also known to help control the algae a little...
Although if you have shrimp in that tank, be sure not to overdose...
If you don't want to use ferts you should be doing frequent large water changes.. plants need nutrients to grow and fish waste alone will not and can not support them. You will continue to have the same issue over and over if you don't at least use root tabs ect. Live plants just like fish need their needs met to thive/survive in "captivity".
Not to sound rude but why have a planted tank if you don't want to take care of the plants?
