Help with bloat/constipation?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
R Rmywife316 , just to be clear, the fish you are treating in the 10G tank is the one you are treating with epsom salt and doing water changes on correct? If so, just continue what you are doing until the meds arrive.

The 125G tank is the tank that is registering some ammonia and nitrite correct? If this tank also has fish in it, you will have to continue doing water changes to keep those numbers down.

It got a bit confusing since you are talking about 2 different tanks and the topic is about the 3 fish you are treating in the 10G tank. ?

Sorry! Yes, you are correct. The 125 has peacocks and haps and the 10 has the three fish who weren’t eating. They seem back to normal now however after feeding peas. Should I still treat with medications or just watch them for a week or so? I don’t want to give them medicine if unnecessary but I also don’t want to assume all is solved either.

I would just continue to treat with Epsom salt and water changes as needed in the 10G tank while monitoring their poop. You can try a little bit of their normal food to see how they eat.

See how they are doing over the next few days as I guess it will take that long to get the meds up to you.

It will take over a week to get the meds. I was going to pick up some general cure at petsmart. That’s seems to be my only option until I can get the others. They didn’t eat any of their food. They sure did attack the peas last night though. Even fighting over them. They’re cleaned out as far as constipation goes. They’ve pooped out the peas lol.

If they are eating then I would do as Dee suggests. Generally an African cichlid that is bloated from anything more than just simple constipation, will not eat. They will typically just lay in a corner at the top or bottom of the tank. IMO there is no need to use medication at this point.

Personally I would order some 1mm NLS Hex-Shield and keep it on hand. If they are getting constipated you might also want to incorporate some NLS AlgaeMax into their diet as well. Good luck.

They’re not eating their regular food. Just the peas. Are those nls foods okay to give as maintenance every once in a while?

The NLS Hex-Shield is fed only on an as needed basis as it is considered a medication.

NLS AlgaeMax can be fed daily.

The fact that they are eating, anything, is what I was commenting on. Sick fish don't eat. Most likely they went off their regular food when under stress of the tank cycle in the other tank, and are now just being fussy, and also still somewhat stressed from being placed into the 10 gallon. Personally I would not medicate.

That makes me feel better. I’ll get it just in case but I’ll watch them for now. Thank you!
