Help with changing substrate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive never had mine on any dark sand so I really cant say what they would look like on that. But I did use 'lapis lustre' in my qt tank and the koliba lap and dabola endli looked horribly washed out. This stuff is a sand that can be found in large bags for cheap. not really construction grade but similar. In my 300g I use CaribSea Peace River which is just a bit darker than the other stuff and my teugelsi and weeksii look really good on it and the lower jaw are okay but could use a bit more pop. Ive read somewhere of the 'perfect' mix with a certain percentage of red garnet, black and tan. Still have not seen what that looks like.
Thanks for the input, im still looking around, havent decide yet, so far all i saw is gravel on the red garnet.

I had ordered some 'red' garnet off ebay and it was the perfect size and Looked great until it got wet. The red was actually purple color. While this is a natural color variety in the garnet, it looked like some fake colored stuff you would see in an overly fake decorated tank, lol. Just needed to add some sponge bob stuff.

Lolz,

Check out red flint sand. Its more of a brown/maroon/ mixed with some black and red.

I have it in my tanks take a look at the vids i just uploaded. Doesnt really show well on the vid but its ok

I like to scoop most out with a solo cup with a couple small pinholes in it to drain the water out then gravel vac the rest out. As for red or black sand I use the same Estes ceramacolor quartz stuff that my buddy shookONES shookONES . His is the teak color and my tanks are the red and black lemme find some pics of mine. http://permacolorquartz.com/products/

Black sand is a mix of the Estes and carrib sea Tahitian moon sand since I ran a little low. The red is just the Estes sand. First pic of the red is a little washed out from outside lighting and a regular bulb and has a little sprinkle of black sand on top. The second red is under a color enhancing flowerhorn/arowana/blood parrot led light

You have to find a distributor for the Estes sand I was lucky enough to have a friend who became one just so he could get it. If I remember it was easy enough for him but minimum order was 3 bags at 40 or 50lbs at a time. Pretty sure the red garnet sand is perfectly fine just the color can be a little hit or miss since it's blasting media. I've seen it a little purplish or dull sometimes.
