Tbh I personally don't have a clue on what it is. Was the driftwood bought from a lfs?
Hello; I do not know what is happening. Not a clue as to what to do or what will happen. I have never used wood in a tank myself but many on the forum have.
Hello; A WC is fine. WC will not hurt the cycle. Some things come to mind. You may already be aware.
first is if you have tap water with chlorine or chloramine then you need to treat the tap water with some sort of water conditioner such as PRIME (there are others).
Another thing is to not load up the tank right away with a lot of fish. Add a small number of fish, wait for a while and add a few more. This allows the beneficial bacteria (bb) you have just been cultivating to increase their population gradually. Too many fish or too big of a single fish can bee too much for the bb and can take them a few days to catch up.
good luck
Yup, the one piece I used previously and have owned for a couple years. The other is brand new. I scrubbed and soaked both of them prior to putting them in the tank. Strange.
When I say it showed up after adding the ammonium, I mean IMMEDIATELY. I think my first dose was late at night, and by the next morning it was there. Not a slow gradual growth, but 0-100 overnight. Hasn’t gotten worse or better in the 10-12 days since.
Whenever I add new driftwood, I get that same algal/fungal growth. It usually doesn't last long.
Most cycles take 6-8 weeks to complete, so it looks to me like you are right on target with the gradual rise in nitrite..
Might as well ask about this too while I’m at it....the first day I added the Ammonium, this grayish greenish hairy looking stuff showed up on my driftwood. Is it just a reaction to the spike in ammonia? Will that go away on its own as the levels drop after the cycle is completed? View attachment 1352384
Yeah I may have to remove it when I do my water change right before getting my first fish in there....thanks for the advice!Hi, its a variation of brown algae...I got it too once all the ammonia during cycling was used up. Mostly I got it on my brown vines. Just pull or scrub it off, it doesn't hurt anything. In fact my vines had gotten REALLY fuzzy at one time!
My latest test results as of about 15 minutes ago
Ammonia- .25 (before dosing back up)
Nitrite- .25
Nitrate- .50
Still looking good?
