help with dead spots in the water

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Do you have adequate surface agitation? You could put a large air pump in with a airstone under the sand where the dead spot is there for continuously resuspending the debris until it finds the sump.

k, I thought I'd share... I have a 150 gal, 30 gallo sump. Return is 1". Durso is 2" down to the sump. I run a Quiet one 6000, so I have plenty of circulation. I've also added a Koralia 4 to one end and an AC110 on the same side. I keep a 7" Fahaka and about 20 convict fry (.5-1" to be eventual feeders). They all love the current. Oh, forgot to mention I also have a hydor V sponge at the other end.

Even at 5ft head you are running 1120 gph (mag drive 12) according to the pump chart. That is more than enough filtration on a 5x2x2 as long as you have some mechanical media in the sump then you have covered all your filtration needs. TBH your sponge filters are pretty much redundant, giving you extra work and taking up space.

I would think the mag drive 12 would be enough flow. If need be I can always sell this and upgrade to the 18. I can always shut off another pvc to dedicate the return flow to one pipe.

nice sig, I am also from Winnipeg. I would like to get the AC110 but i have glass tops that I do not want to cut to fit the AC.

here is an old pic, the dead spot is actually under the driftwood in the middle. that pvc cave is not there anymore. The 2 45degree elbow return are just split from 1 line and those are off.

That dead spot would be easily targeted with a small powerhead, either an actual koralia or one of the many other brands as they can be manipulated to any direction you need in the tank where normal powerheads cannot be aimed. They are very discreet considering the amount of water they push around.

The flow into the sump should be adequate agetation for the gas exchange.

As for possibly upgrading, you are pushing over 4000 l/hr through your sump. That is more than most people do on larger tanks plus you must consider the outlet's capacity.

Could your outlet/s keep up with a mag 18 and would it be like a raging river from the inlets and possibly stress your fish?

thanks for the tip, as for the upgrade it was just a thought. I'll probably go ahead and purchase 1 koralia evo 1050 and replace the powerhead pointing to the overflow, and aim it towards that area. how does that sound?

if you just want to try and keep waste from settling there then a power head would do that no problem.
a canister would be good if you want a filter to pull water and waste from the bottom of your tank and they can polish the water nicely.
my xp3 came with a spray bar attachment along with a few others.
