It's been just over a month now since I started doing my fishless cycle.
I've been testing for ammonia everyday until I started to see 0 mg/l - 0.25 mg/l and then started doing my nitrite testing.
Today my nitrite test shows <0.3 mg/l and the ammonia test is showing 1.5 mg/l.
Unfortunately I don't have a nitrate test just yet :(, it's on it's way though!

Is this normal?
Can anybody help me out if not?

u can use Seachem Stability to speed up the process.

wanna do it naturally!

it wont mess anything up, many people including myself have used it successfully.

But, Hey.. to each his own.. ;)

you use water conditioner when u do ur water changes, right?

Sorry about that. My girlfriend got hold of my phone.

A lot of people have recommended just cycling with fish, testing and doing water changes when needed.
Is it normal for the ammonia to drop to zero and then jump back up again after a few days?
How long does it take to do a fish-in cycle? I've heard people have success cycling in a month or just over, but it looks like I'm still in the first part of the cycle?
I'm currently using Seachem Prime when I do my water changes, if I used the Stability, would I just add it after a water change as I would with Prime?

lol... typical girlfriend response :nilly:

anyways, prime neutralizes ammonia for 24-48hours maybe that's why u got a NH reading of 0.

the fishless cycle is the fastest, cleanest and most humane way to cycle a tank. a fish in cycle can take 4-8 weeks. i have done fishless cycles in 11 days with pure ammonia and seachem stability.

u have to use both seachem stability and prime. i add seachem stability right after i dose ammonia. i dose prime while the tank fills up with water from the hose attached to my sink.

Hope this doesn't sound stupid, but if prime neutralises ammonia, will this mess up my cycle?

I'll be doing a fishless cycle on my 110 gallon when I've got the time/equipment.
If I used Stability on this tank, using the directions on the website, it looks like it'd cost quite a bit?

using prime will not interfere with the cycle. however, i didn't use prime when i did fish less cycles. i aged my water in the tank then started dosing ammonia and seachem stability. i did water changes before i added my stock after the cycle was complete. even after that i still continued to use Seachem stability with the fish in the tank.

Seachem claims that u can just add all ur fish at once and then start dosing and you can live happily ever after. im a bit skeptical about that.. i believe in doing things right the first time. thats why i dose seachem stability during the cycle and after. the amount used is not as much as u may believe, im not sure what u consider, ''quite a bit'' . whatever it is, it is.

if ur cycling ur tank and u dont wanna use chemicals,
first off, live plants provide a huge ammount of benficial bacteria so add a few plants to boost and fast forward ur cycle...
also if u dont want plants,
throw a piece of fruit in there and let it go for a day or 2,
bad bac will gro and good bac will grow more........
and also dont use some chemical that gets rid of the prob for a day or to,
get something that actually improves good bac growth asnd has good bac in it!!

his girlfriend posted that comment about not using chemicals.. The OP has no problem with them..

also, i would not use rotting fruit to cycle a tank. it will start to smell and make a big mess. pieces of the decaying matter will fall off the object and get sucked into the filter where they will continue to rot and cause nitrates to increase dramatically over time.

in order to prevent that u would have to do some major filter maintenance right off the bat, putting the new cycle at risk.

PURE AMMONIA IS THE WAY TO GO.
