My GT is having trouble swimming. It looks like he can not turn around. When he trys he is jerking quite a bit and it looks like it hurts. He just hangs out at the bottom and will swim when has to. The Temp is at 78*, PH at 8.0 the rest of the water is fine. Don't know what it is??!!
His diet is pellets (hikari??) and give him Market shrimp once a week.
His tankmate is a gold fish that is fine which throws me off. Any mights based on the description of him having trouble swimming (he does not lean on his side at all. He can hold his weight, just swimming is very difficult)?????

How big is the tank? Is there ammonia or nitrite? How often do you do water changes? How big is the GT?

50gl with a RenaX3 filled with ceramic rings and one tray with carbon,
GT is abot 5" and weekly water changes of 50%. Have had him for about 5-6 months and never had any problems
No Nitrate or amonia, was the first things I checked. The pleco (5") and goldfish (6") dont seem to be having any ab-normal activities?

anyone????

Swim bladder problem? I don't really know, sorry.

a ph of 8.0 is really high for SA/CA cichlids. But, since he's been in this kind of water for 5 months, that couldn't be it.

Maybe internal parasites, this can be a first sign. Is he still eating? Stringy, white poo? Scratches, missing scales, frayed fins? Does he keep his dorsal fin up? Parasites can be a serious problem and you'll have to treat it asap.

His fins are fine? All the pooh looks normal (dark) as I have a bare bottom tank. His fins look like as if he trys to hold them close to his body.
If it is a parasite, what do I add to the tank? Salt...?
Have not noticed if hes eating, but will continue to try!!!

I noticed he is breathing hard, what does this mean??? My daughter is so bumbed out (it is her fish and tank. She is 7yrs old)!!!:(

Thanks for your help guys

add some aquarium salt, bump up the temperature, and turn off the lights.
If there is other tankmates, separate them.

If it gets worse, post some pics and maybe we can help some more.

He is still acting the same. I don't think pics would do any good. You can't tell anything is wrong with him from any still image. Its when he moves, is when you can see the prob:(
