I want to say he's a Sanchezi. My personal Sanchezi look much different but I've seen a few reputable vendors offering Sanchezi that look just like that.

One way to tell for certain. Throw a dozen feeder Comets with him. If he just takes the tails off, he's a Sanchezi.

If he eats the whole fish then he's a Rhom. That's not fail proof but would be my first thought.

How long has he been in your tank? Did he have more red/purple color at the store you bought him?
That has got to be the worst, most unreliable way of telling what specie it is. I can't even believe that someone would think that this would work..
That's like trying to see what kind of monkey it is by how many bananas it eats..
Rhombeus.

Rhombeus.

Have you ever owned a Sanchezi?

I agree, it sounds ludicrous but each and every Sanchezi I've encountered...and I've encountered a few, ate nothing but the tail. An easy solution would be to have the OP shoot a picture of the scutes and post it.

Ide hate to burst the bubble but all serrasalmus sp. Are fin and scale eaters in the wild. It just so happens that the rhombeus gets much much bigger and will eat more of said fish. My brandtii would only eat the tails of feeders and he was 10 inches. Not once did he eat a fish head. And he would slam two market shrimp a night. IMO that theory cannot hold its weight in water. Not trying to doubt your observations, but to me that's un reliable

I agree, the only certain way to tell is a close up of the scutes. I probably posted too quickly and now that I think about it, it is kind of crazy. Still, I've never had any other Sarrasalmus species other than Sanchezi eat nothing but the tail invariably. I have 16 in the same tank and they'd almost starve themselves if there were no other food source than tails. I'm sure if it came down to it, they'd eat the body but they'll go to eating each others fins before eating an entire body.

I say it's a Sanchezi...

Okay...sorry for the derail....but you are using the past tense when referring to one of the nicest brandts I've ever seen. Say it aint so....:( Was it the cohab?

I hate to jump in the middle of this because a) I dislike interweb drama, and b) both of you guys are my homies, but...

there is some legitimacy to what OH is claiming. Cepon is right, all serras are fin/scale eaters, but sanchezi's subsist primarily off of shoals of RBP's in the wild. RBP fins constitute the bulk of their diets and they are obligatory fin eaters.

on the flip side of that coin...it's a poor method for making a species identification.

OP post some scutes and we'll settle this once and for all before it gets out of hand.

Not the cohab. I had mcluvin, or my brandtii for 2 years. In the 2 years I had him he grew only one inch. So if I go by the ratio of time to inches my boy was an old man. Things actually were going very well between the two of them, but seemingly out of the blue he lost his fire.. I seperated them and over the course of the next couple of weeks he stopped smashing the glass when I was near his tank which slowly turned to him not bothering with his food. All his water parameters were the same and all was well. I guess it was his time to pass. I have since then donated the smaller brandtii to a friend of mine and retired from piranha keeping.
