Help with Monster Tanks and cost of upkeep

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Does anyone vehemently disagree with glass as the building material on such a large tank? The weight is rough, but it seems glass stands the test of time better?

Albertan has a 1,000 gallon glass tank that he had built on site.

There are pros and cons to both glass and acrylic. Acrylic is lighter, but scratches very easily. The type of fish you keep could factor in your decision. I have big tank busters who smash into the tank walls so violently that it sounds like an explosion. It took about 6 months before I stopped running into the living to check on the fish every time I heard an "explosion". No way could I put my monsters in a glass tank. Then there is the issue of resealing glass. I don't know if it is just something that has to be done with time or what. 99% of leaking, failing tanks on MFK involve glass tanks. (might be a slight exaggeration) All the catastrophic fail threads involve glass tanks, and that scares me.

Hello; I have never run an acrylic tank so my comments may be useless. I do visit a fish shop that has a 1200 gallon acrylic display tank.
It may be that the employees do not maintain the tank as good as is possible, but the tanks appearance had declined over time. It is notably less clear now a few years on.
I guess the surface can be polished to very clear again but what do they do with all the fish? I am assuming the tank will have to be empty for such polishing? Being a shop they can likely find a place for the fish, not sure what a private tank owner will do if the acrylic tank is loaded with large fish.

How do you clean algae off the surface of an acrylic tank without scratching it?

One thing for sure glass can be scratched. I made the mistake of buying a dirty used tank some years ago. Turned out it had lots of fine scratches. I can replace the glass with some effort but the same tank in acrylic I could buff out I guess.

I have been to large public aquariums with acrylic tanks that are very clear. Do not know how they go about it. Do they somehow avoid scratches to begin with or do they have a way to clear scratches when full of water?

Hello; watched the video. Thanks. I have done similar wet sanding auto paint. labor intensive for sure but it works.

No fish concerns here. I don't keep monsters or any type of pleco that would chew. I do love sand as a substrate. And a lot of fish I keep sift sand.

I like this car wash brush (WalMart). Very soft bristles, rubber all around, no hard areas that could scratch acrylic. Works very well in my 300 gallon tank.

They also have a long handled one that will work on my big tank.
